Privacy Policy

The short version

The Stack Guide is a software review site. We use Google Analytics to understand which pages people read, we store your email address if you choose to subscribe to our newsletter, and we record which outbound links are clicked so we know which reviews are useful. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not run advertising networks on this site.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics, which sets cookies and collects usage data including the pages you visit, approximate location derived from your IP address, browser and device type, and the site or search that referred you. Google processes this data on our behalf; see Google's Privacy Policy for how they handle it. You can opt out with Google's browser add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser. The site works normally either way.

Newsletter

If you subscribe, we store the email address you give us so we can send you the newsletter. We do not require a name or any other detail. We do not sell or rent subscriber lists. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time by writing to us via the contact page.

Affiliate links and click tracking

Outbound links to the products we review pass through a redirect on this site (/go/<product>). When you use one, we record on our server which product was clicked, which page you clicked from, and the time. We do not attach your name or email to that record, and we do not set a cookie of our own at that step.

After the redirect you arrive on the vendor's own site, and the vendor or their affiliate network will typically set a cookie so any purchase can be credited to us. That cookie is theirs, governed by their privacy policy, not ours. How we earn from those links is set out in full in our Affiliate Disclosure.

Accounts

Most of the site is readable without an account. If account features are enabled, sign-in is handled by Clerk, which stores the credentials and profile details you provide to it; see Clerk's Privacy Policy. We do not store your password.

What we never do

• We do not sell or rent your personal information.
• We do not run third-party advertising networks or behavioural ad trackers on this site.
• We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live — including under the UK GDPR, EU GDPR and the CCPA — you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to certain processing. In practice the only personal data we hold directly is a newsletter email address. Ask us through the contact page and we will act on it.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and the date at the top. Material changes will be described here rather than made quietly.
